January in Ireland

In the darkest month of the year, what is it really like in Ireland in January?

Let's start off by saying that, yes, January is the darkest month of the year but some true rewards await those who brave the elements.

Weather

Not as bad as you might think... It's certainly chilly, but the freshness is invigorating.

You can definitely expect a relatively major storm to pass through at some stage of the month. Regardless, we're well used to these storms, so it's very rare that travel is disrupted in any major way.

Things to Do

All major attractions are open, and most services continue year round. Smaller operators close from Nov-Mar, so you will have to plan ahead on what to do each day and make sure the place you are visiting is definitely open.

What are the Irish up to this month?

Following the Christmas period folks are usually fairly partied out of it, and many take the month of January to refill their bank balances and give their bodies some TLC. For many, this comes in the form of "dry January" where folks take the month off drinking any kind of alcohol and replace those pub hours with gym hours.

Best month for...

- Anyone looking for a deal. Our accommodation partners offer fantastic rates in January, so expect your money to go a lot further than at any other time of year.

- Anyone looking to avoid the crowds. You will litterally have the place to yourselves.
